building an xc out of an mx

whats up guys. recently purchased an 09 factory built ltr.its was built by doug gusts' and josh creamers' old mechanic and 2010 pro atv mechanic of the year Joe Havel in the suzuki/yoshimura factory.it has all the frills and workings of a top level mx'r unfortunately i run woods only so i'm in the process of converting it to a woods machine. relax,i'm only doing the minimum stuff i have to to get it there.

couple questions.i was reviewing old posts about the blingstar style sprocket/rotor guards and it seemed like people were saying it could derail the chain or even rip the countershaft out if a substantial stick/rock got in there.so has this happened alot?is it really an issue? never happened to me on any machine i've had running skids or not but wanted to hear others opinions and testimonials.my only real other option is to send the swinger back to JB and have them weld on the bungs and re-pc it for 150 plus shipping.

also i was looking for a good FF skid.i liked the pro armor style with the "wings" if you will jutting out to protect various areas of importance.people were saying they didnt like them due to the fact it was a pita to change the oil.it appears from recent pictures they have solved the problem.is this so???

i have a set of beadlocks with 22's up front and 20's in the rear to mount on this thing.anything else i'm missing to transform this into a tough, reliable bark buster? thx in advance for any help.

The BS rotor guard ends up breaking the bearing carrier b/c of the way that it mounts, def. stay away from it. Lonestar, GT Thunder and Tiexterra Tech all make much better choices that are also cheaper. As for the body skid, I have been running a Pro Armour for a few years now, it is tough, but you do have to remove it every time you change the oil. As for parts to convert to XC...

Narrower a-arms and axle and an xc rear linkage.
Larger wheels and tires.
Flexx bars with full wrap handguards.
new bumper and wide grab bar

I think that would be a good start...go from there depending on your own needs and comfort.

yea i had read about the rotor guard breaking the stock carrier but i assumed the one on the machine was not stock, poor assumption i admit.so do they break all?the BS sprocket guard is ok/good?is there one better, meaning more reliable/stronger or better for any reason?
it looked like they changed the pro armor but i wasn't sure if it was cosmetics/cleanouts stuff or if they had addressed the oil change issue.is there one that meets my requirements is better suited to this whilst still maintaining the "wings" and is sturdy by way of mounting?

for width she sits at 48" which suits everywhere i ride just fine.the wheels i have are 4:1 offset fronts and i was going to switch off the spacers on the axle to match, bringing me down to 46.less than i'm used to/need for now but enough to get me going,i'll settle on something later.

xc link, any idea if this will work with the current fox shock/swinger (JB full mx)?if not what are the changes i would have to make?

the flex bars i'm not so convinced on yet,20+ years riding without them on various machines its hard to make a change like that.like running twist throttle only, this thing is outta control for me with the thumber.personal preference thing at this point.same with the handguards, not sold on my hand being wrapped in a weak(compared to the forces that would be applied given a situation that would matter) material,or even a strong material for that matter.personal preference thing.

bumper and grab bar i'm with you for sure.any suggestions?

thx a ton for all your help and advice,it is much appreciated.

Honestly, ANYTHING that you do is really just a matter of personal preference and budget, of course. I have stock arms, axle and suspension on my bike and I run woods with almost no problems at all. I'm just a little more sore the next day than the guys with nicer parts. Dropping a few grand into suspension would definately make it more comfortable, but it's not in my budget.
As for the skid plate...the "wings" that you mention don't really offer any extra protection that is going to make a diffence, don't buy one just b/c of that. The Pro Armour is good, PRM makes excellent products also.
I would go with the LSR (Lonestar Racing) sprocket and rotor guard if I were you, the BS stuff is mostly just for looks. If you search through the site, you'll see that there are complaints on most of their products...not just the rotor guard.
The Flexx bars are worth the money....ask anyone. A set a Flexxs' and a good steering stabilizer are worth a million bucks half way through a woods race.

ok sounds good.i know most things are personal preference, just wanted to see what others were doing.i swore of prm a long time ago due to someissues i had with some stuff i bought from them.unless i find something better looks like i'll be going with the pro armor FF skid.the flex bars i will consider,my buddy has them on his can am mx'r maybe i'll trade off machines with him for part of a day.how about that xc ink u mentioned.will it work with the fox,i believe its a podium, rear shock and the JB full mx swingarm?thx again for the advice.
