Hi,

I'm from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and am wanting to know where the best dunes are in Oregon. Since I'll be coming into Oregon from the north along the west coast the more northern dunes would be preferable (less driving), but if there's a place that's really awesome that's further south I'll definitely make the drive. I'll be leaving July 3 and plan for 2 days driving one way and 2 days of riding.

From some of the research I've been doing it seems like there could be restrictions on getting into some of these parks during the July 4 celebrations due to too many people. I guess I won't actually start riding until July 5 but do ya'll think this could be a problem??

Just looking on the internet it seems like there is sand dune parks pretty much all along the coast but I would very much appreciate everyone's input on where I should go. This is my first trip duning so I want to make it a memorable one.

It'll be me and my bro, LTR and a YZF450 (dirtbike). I'm ordering my 9 paddle gliders and mohawks for the front tomorrow and a rear paddle tire for him as well. I know we need flags, or is that something we can just pick up there? I'll also be bringing a couple air filters along and of course water. Anything I'm forgetting?

Or should I just scrap Oregon and go to Little Sahara in Utah or St. Anthony's in Idaho (Idaho is definitely closer)?

Thanks!

I would say go to St. A's. Even though it is a holiday weekend it will still not be packed.

Forget about any other place. Head down to Windchester Bay! Its got the best dunes (at least the biggest) in the U.S.A. All you need is a forest pass which cost $30 for a year or $5 for a day pass. You could go to Sandlake which is a little farther north and will save you a little driving time but the dunes are pretty flat and the riding area isn't all that big (has no razor backs either). You get bored after awhile and its usually pretty packed which can be dangerous at times. Windchester is never overly packed and has a big riding area with a lot of different terrain so you never get bored. And those big dunes.....

Yeah don't got to Sandlake. It's where locals from northern Oregon and SW washington go when they just want a day ride but don't want to drive all the way down to the Florence/Coos Bay area. I've just got back into quading after about 5 years off. I know I would never go to the dunes on a holiday weekend. I had so much DB trouble with the forestry service at the driftwood parking lot when I had my 400EX. The sound levels are so low that they can pretty much ticket whoever they want. They are kinda like bears fishing on a river of salmon, you just have to keep your head down hual ass and hope they already got someone else, lol.

hey i just got back from the dunes in june and what a place to ride, make the trip there it will be worth it.....BUT you should make a reservation somewhere or you might not get a spot to stay...camping or hotel..i am also from canada (VANCOUVER) AND THE RULES STATE IF YOUR FROM OREGON YOU NEED THE PASS FOR YOUR MACHINE,BUT IF YOU ARE OUT OF STATE OR COUNTRY YOU NEED TO HAVE WHATEVER WE NEED IN OUR PROVINCE.I WENT WITH NOTHING AND HAD NO PROBLEMS,BECAUSE IT IS NOT LAW HERE TO HAVE YOUR QUAD INSURED UNLESS WE RIDE ON THE MAIN FORESTRY ROADS...HOPE YOU GO AND HAVE A GREAT TRIP!!!!

Oh yeah, one other thing about going to Windchester Bay versus other Oregon riding places. I've never seen someone get ticketed for being overy loud or anything else for that matter at Windchester. You actually hardly see the forest cops around the area. But Sandlake or Florence is another matter. It seems like the cops are just waiting to write you up. In fact when I went to Sandlake to break my second LT in, all I had was my spark arrester removed and they wrote me up for being too loud. I usually ride at Windchester and have always had a aftermarket exhaust on my bike and after close to 25 years of riding, I've yet to get a ticket for anything at Windchester.

Hey Crazy_canuck I was just curious if the border crossing officials gave you any problems trucking your quads over the border? My quad is insured and registered (very lame but it costs $200 a year for me for everything and I'm very tired of being ticketed for stupid things) so that shouldn't be a problem.

My LTR only has the normal CB, airbox lid and baffle out. Are they pretty picky about spark arrestors down there? Cause if they are I guess I'll have to modify mine to remove the baffle but keep the spark arrestor screen.
