Welding Prices????

1218 Views 15 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  blue_eyed_surfer2002
This has nothig to do with my zuki, but I was wondering what the general rate is to have a hot rod shop weld in replacement floor pans on an old car??????? I already have the pans. I have a 1964 ford fairlane im restoring and the nearest hot rod shop is an hour away. No one will give me an estimate before they see the car but I really dont want to haul it that far and find out its gonna cost me an arm and a leg.........

Im also kinda wondering how much it runs to have the body prepped for paint, but I know that depends on the shape of the body and how big the car is

thanks for the help guys

I worked in a body shop for awhile and it probably will cost more than what you want to pay if your worried about driving an hour to have it looked at. They also DO need to look at it to give you an estimate as to if it just needs patches, whole floor, sections, rockers, is the fuel, drive lines outta the way etc... There is a lot more than just cut and weld. If I them and would guess, I would just say $1500 because I have no idea what you want and don't want you to be like you said it was only going to be $500 on the phone. Just a few things to consider.

We did a "hack and slash" on a 59 fairlaine in acrylic in a week for a guy that bought own paint (thats why it was acrylic) for 15-2000. I really don't know but I know he handed the boss $800 twice.
well all i need is the two front pans and the kicker panels, everything is out of the way (car is stripped). Im deffinately not looking forward to forking out that much money though. I have the pans already so i just want the whole piece replaced instead of patching it up

im deffinately not looking forward to paying over a grand to have them done though, think of all the junkie fiber i could get with that $$$$$$
Judging that you already have the pans and the car is stripped i reall really doubt it would be $1500.00. I would say a good estimate would be 300-500. All they have to do its make it "look" good, if its not going to be a "wizard" car then as long as it looks good and no holes or boogered up its not a whole lotta work. Just time consuming above anything else.

As far as prepping. Like hinkle i worked in a body shop too for a while, started just repairs then the shop did some custom stuff ill look for pictures...anyways the prep work is THE most important step to how the finished paintjob will look. Basically it just depends on how good you want it to look...the sky's the limit!

one hour each way... its well worth the drive just to have an estimate... from where i live it is 15 minutes one way for beer, 30 minutes one way for liqour, an hour and a half one way to the nearest city with a modest population of 20,000... so for me personally that drive would be a cake walk. shoot you could leave after breakfast and be back before lunch :) and maybe with your car left there and getting fixed :fro:
500 to 800 sounds like a fair deal from here...and Duner is right...it all depends on how picky your gonna be...as far as the prep of the car?...

Killer resto prices are abour 10 to 12 grand for a complete...Modest prices are gonna run you about 7 to 10...I've never seen anyone get a good paint job for under 6 grand...and we're not talking Earl Schieb here..I'm talking a honest to goodness stripped down to metal, kill the rust, dig out the bondo and straighten out your car by someone who knows whats gotta be done to put it all back on the right way

Not Billy Bondo and his cousin Larry Lacquer...

The last thing to remember is do NOT let your car sit if you only gonna do the prep work...the water will go right through the primer and rust your project from underneath...so when you finally do paint and seal the car? Eventually you will get raised little "pimples" all over your car because it rusting now...so my advice is to wait until you have all the cash on hand...then do it right...

Not an expert BUT...I have restored enough cars in my time to know a little...

Hope this thread helped... :D

I know I went high, but just to prove a point about a shot in the dark. I'm sure duner would back me up on people being surprised at an increase in price from phone to actual price.

With something with the dash, pedals, carpet, sets etc.. out of the car, would be considerably less.

I got a few pics of a car we did for under 7 grand I have to up load the pics so I'll post them back here in a few....Oh this car did take "best of show" at Quaker City in Ohio.

77' Buick Skylark with a 455..ran 12.20 pussy footin it, but spun the cams or something...we didn't build the motor...I believe it ran 10.60 after the cams were fixed

WOW.

very clean car. good job.
Honestly...imo...go buy a cheap 110 mig with a small C-25 tank and do it yourself. Mig welding is'nt hard at all, all your gonna do is spot it into place, then take other metal and learn to weld beads. Remeber to push the mig wand...do not pull it. Not only will you get a welder, you'll get the experience and save a few $$$$$ while your at it!
the problem with doing it myself is the car is an old unibody, so it needs supporting set up inside before the pans are cut out. I have most the body work done already and its out of the weather, but once i get the floor in im going to have the body work professionally done. I dont have a truck to haul the car so i have to rely on my buddies to tow it around (which sucks) so long drives are a pain.

This site kicks a$$, I couldnt even get this kinda help from the fairlane dedicated owners site. maybe ill ship the car to junkie and have him junkie fiber it for me

I deffinately can spring for anything under a grand, thanks for the heads up and advice guys
Whole car huh?...well..I guess...but where will you put all the trophies your going to win afterwards???

Hinkle, yes i agree it always goes up when you see it, half because you say a price that will get people in and the other half is they usually arent telling all that needs to be done over the phone "oh just a little welding"

Junkie is right expect in the 7 range for a nice paint job. Also very very important if you want it too look like a paint job that was a couple grand more avoid "clear" or "weak" colors like silvers or light reds. Aim for browns or blues or greens they hide small imperfections really good

That big steel beast ran a 10.6??? Good god thats fast!!!
It is crazy loud, thats about all I've got to see of it, the 10.6 is what he said it ran. It definitly had the potential with the set up...not dyno proven but engine mathimatics predicted around close to 600hp with 10" M/T and crail trap bars to keep 'em on the ground. The boss of the shop I worked at had a 69 camaro yenko look-a-like with a 427 race cam and a demon 1000cfm carb and some fine tuning from an old engine builder that also ran 10.6's with straight pipes "HUH WHAT DID YOU SAY" loud, it would lift the right wheel about a foot of the ground. haha. He had another 69 with just some mild stuff from when he was 18-20 that he still had in 05 that would run 12's but he sold it for around 12,000 or so. Then the motorcycle guy we know that we would do his body work on had a 6 second bike...I think the best was 205mph 1/4 mile that also had a 87 yami with a custom block that didn't fit in the fairings with more HP than his race one  It was around a 1500 cc motor that he had made after he laid it down with the stock motor with a "few" mods. That guy is crazy, nothing but. And them...lol

I figured if i could afford to have the whole car done, I could afford a separate garage add on for my trophies and the extra girlfiends that ill undoubtedly get with such a hot car
A wise man indeed...now THATS thinking ahead...
good to know I have my priorities in line hu
