Hey guys...my son has been pretty hot and bothered to try these throat mics ever since our ATV Safety instructor showed us his set-up...they seem like a good idea...so I'm throwing it out there...let me know what you think...he has a couple of motorola's and here's the mic set-up he was looking at...

Why would anybody want to listen to me ride? I would sound like Ricky Bobby on the mic, "yep I'm flying thru the air, this isn't good" and when I crash "help me Tom Cruise, use your witchcraft and help me!"

Hey it would be good for a couple a laughs

Junkie, I am unsure of the ones you are looking at...we researched these back in January and received some great information from Jeff (JJK450R), Steve knows him, and Jeff said he has purchased nearly every brand of these available on the market and he would only recommend these:
Stryker
Jeff uses the Stryker pro model with the push to talk button and he says this is the only set worth purchasing...I have no personal experience with any of them other then the lack luster performance of what our Motorola's came with, but Jeff knows his stuff and I regard his opinion very highly.

Junkie, the sweetest setup IMO would be the Stryker mics and the Garmin Rino 530...the Garmins have a full 5 watts of broadcast power (compared to 2 watts of the motorola talkabouts) and if you happen to fly over a razor and be unable to speak Steve can still find you!!!
Rhino 530 Clicky

So for about a grand you and one other person could really communicate well!!!

There are less expensive rino models and deserve some looking into...I just like the color and the sensors the 530 gives you (compass, altimeter, etc plus with 56MB you could load up the topo maps).

That's funny because I was telling my wife about them and she said that's all she needs is for me to listen on what she's saying like:

Holy %hit there's now way in *ell I'm going over that.
He must be crazy
Oh $hit
etc
etc

We had a good laugh.

I'm seriously thinking about a set though.

Nice find Junkie!

We use GMRS radios with "best buy" headsets.... they are basicly like a hands free set for radios... we set the earbud in the helmet but they still use a PTT (push to talk) button.

If you can find an economical non-ptt headset aka VOX, that would be the way to go. We looked into this before buying out "best buy" stuff. But decided we wanted to try things out first. Our radios with PTT work great if we're with the kids and riding slow. But in a fast ride, I don't have time to let go of the grips to use the PTT. That is where a VOX unit would be best.
