Sorry Kidsdad... this is what I'm talking about. The little screen under the tank. The big guys are calling it the swirl tank. Beats the hell outta me why.

Starting fluid eh??

I had a buddy with a polishing wheel and the right compounds do it. You aren't going to do that by hand with a tub of mothers polish

Sure you could. But does that inline filter "fine" enough for our EFI system?? Also, I would have a backup inline on hand if you did. I found more crap than I thought I would. I don't have many hours on the bike and I'm pretty anal about keeping it clean.....

Mainly, mine had a dark appearance to it. Is it full of crap?? Until you've had it apart, it would be hard to understand how it is made.....

Now, after it has dried out, it has a clean white appearance to it?? (scratching my head)

Pics coming just for you

Also, it is hard for people to help me diagnose without knowing what is up. Here is a pm I sent Alelks.

Al,

How's it going man? I've been busy lately but managed to get a dune trip in. I didn't ride the R450 much with the 250R running as good as it is. But once I had it out and was going to wail off a big dune. Was hitting some gears and it DIED at the bottom of the dune. Man was I glad that it did it at the bottom!

Anyhow, it died and never tried to keep running no matter what I did. It was electrical at that time. The FI light was blinking. I waited for a few minutes and it just started up and ran fine. Headed back to camp and it died the same way again. Just dead. So I looked at some connections. Seemed that the terrible mounting that Yoshi came up with on the PIM was giving me fits. The velrco was coming off. It was pulling hard enough that the big main plug was about half way undone. I was happy to see this and was convinced that once I got that problem fixed, I would be good to go.

Well..... then I take care of that and stay close to camp and just hit the drag strip for a little bit. First time I went to race, the bike was trying to die(different than before), sounding like a lack of gas this time. I shut the bike off and heard the pump "gargling" so I was sure it wasn't getting the proper fuel. Took it back to camp and didn't ride it anymore.

I was sure the swirl tank screen was the issue. I have mine out but can't really tell that it is dirty. Have you messed with yours? Any other ideas?

Thanks
Adam

WOW.......yours looks just like the new one that I got from Cernics! I wasnt having any problems with mine but when I pulled the tank of to put the HC piston in I looked at the swirl filter and it was a dark brown. I cleaned it with some starter fluid just to get it looking better then it was. When I put my new one in....every time I fill the tank it will be through the screened funnel I also got from Cernics with the outerware cover.

Good luck, Nick.

ok....got it....doesnt look all that dirty though. However, have you checked your petcock? If that filter is getting dirty that I assure you your petcock is looking alittle ragged.

Are you speaking from the carb days? This is basically the petcock area you would have like on a carb bike. That is the filter/fuel valve under the tank just like your typical petcock. The valve is completely wide open... no small areas that crap could get caught up in.

I thought it looked pretty new now that it has dried out. There is one small stained area on the bottom where a little crud was in the bottom of the swirl tank. I really don't see an issue here so I'm going to button it back up.

Another thing to consider is that I have been running 50/50 race fuel on this bike. Leaded. I don't see that doing anything but I just thought I would throw it out there. I don't want the uneducated to say "that is your problem" just because you heard it from someone else. Prove it to me.

The filter has a clothy looking material inside it that kinda looks like white worms meaning it is wiggled all around in there? Does yours look like that Nick?

I think I have laid my hand on every connector. Everything looks good. The filter looks good.

What next? Where's my tech help? I can't have this thing dying just as I peak a dune jumping

Steve's bike acted just like that...we even ran down and got a can of gas because the symptoms we're all similar...then found the red/black wire from the key switch at the first connection was coming loose...

I'm sure you already checked that out but you may want to pull it apart..it wasn't real obvious until you looked inside and played with it while it was disconnected.. :(

Clone,

The inside of my filter looks just as you subscribed.

Since I am no longer using 93 octane due to the HC piston no more pump gas will be going into my bike........

The reason I bring this up is because all I ever used was pump gas and my filter was dirty as HELL so I will NEVER use it again.

Some of the blame could be put on my for not filtering it first but I have now learned my lesson.

For anyone riding their bike and using pump gas I would suggest filtering it with a sock(yes the one that goes on your foot)

Anything will help as pump gas is dirty and not very clean!

Sorry for the poem......Nick.
