The stock throttle lever is killing me! I have seen YFZ and Kawi guys swap over to the Honda throttle because it has less resistance and easier on the thumb. Has anyone here done this? Is it as easy as ordering a new assembly from Honda?

I have read the post on the twist throttle where it implies people prefer it over twist but from talking to some well seasoned racers it is not the safest thing. I would rather stay thumb...

Thanks in advance for any direction. I used the search tool but did not find any similar questions.

The suzuki cable hooks up differently than the honda. The Suzy cable slots in the housing and the honda cable threads in. You might check with Motion Pro or other cable companies to see if they have made a conversion cable like you are needing before buying the Honda thumber.

I called Motion Pro and they are going to custom make a cable that will work with the LTR and the Honda TRX450R (04/05) thumb throttle. This setup is not typical since it marries 2 competitors but from what I hear first hand the Honda's thumb throttle is awesome for racing.

Thanks for your help Clone.

Throttle and cable are installed. Cable from Motion Pro (via Toby) was $30 plus shipping. List price for the Honda parts was about $110.

Went riding yesterday all day and did not experience any thumb fatigue. This mod has been worth every penny and I would recommend it to anyone.

Installation was a little bit of a pain. You must remove all front plastics, remove gas tank and associated parts in order to get down to the end of the throttle cable. All parts came together perfect.

I too didn't like the stiffness of the LTR throttle compared to my LTZ. All I did though was disconnect the spring out of the thumb throttle itself and that fixed it for me. There is plenty of spring at the other end of the cable.

PS Somehow I missed this thread or I would have posted the solution earlier.

Wondered if something of this sort was possible...I clipped the spring inside the carb on the infamously stiff YFZ throttle, and that obviously made a world of difference. Between all the little things like this, it shows you how spoiled you are after hopping back onto a stock machine

I worry that relying solely on the spring at the other end could have its adverse effects. Run through some mud, get dust on it, whatever have you... and you may end up with a sticky throttle in the wrong position.

If it works that way too then there you go. I feel pretty safe with the set up that I have put on, it was pretty inexpensive (since I get parts at dealer price) but it was certainly not free.

By the way I did this to my LTZ also when I installed the FCR carb and TRX thumb throttle and I haven't had any problems at all.

Actually on the LTR I didn't even take the spring out. I just disconnected it so it doesn't put pressure on the thumb throttle.

I don't know where u guys are getting that the throttle is stiff, I rode for two years on my YFZ and never thought it stiff then i hopped on my LTR and then went back to the YFZ and the LTR has alot less resistance.

I think I must be the spoiled one....have any of you raced on a Cannondale??? Those are the most EASY throttle levers EVER! It was like butter. I thought it might be due to the EFI...when I hopped on an LTR for the first time, however, it was a different story. I can make a few laps before my thumb starts getting tired, but on a YFZ it only takes a lap and usually I am dying...lol. Whats this about taking out a spring? I dont want to do anything the "easy way out" with this quad.. so if it is a "chancy" mod I dont want to do it!

It's a simple mod. Take the top off of your thumb throttle. You'll see a spring in there. Either take it out or unhook it and it'll make a big difference. I would take it out to be on the safe side just to make sure there is no chance of it jamming up the thumb throttle in the future. I was too lazy and just unhooked it.

I did the same thing on an aftermarket (Moose) thumb throttle that I had on my Predator. It worked fine the whole time I had it and it's still working fine (one year later) for the guy who bought it off me.

I would think so. The only way to find out is to do it. It's simple to do. My Z has the TRX thumb throttle but it is hooked to an aftermarket FCR carb though that has plenty of spring at the carb.
