Steering Stem Removal

2294 Views 14 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  ammohog01
I am new to this procedure so bear with me. I have the handlebars, the front plastics, and the big nut on the bottom of the stem removed. Is there anything I need to be aware of after this point? I mean does stuff need to be removed in a specific order or a specific way? I am pretty mechanically inclined just limited on tools. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Removing the stem can be a little hard. Best to have some one help you. Tap the bottom with a small rubber mallet. Be careful with the dust seals, they can easily rip. Watch that you dont get to much debris in the stem housing. And write down (or have a manual) the order how you remove the parts.
The only thing that is giving me problems is the Allen Screw at the bottom of the stem. I tried using an Allen Key, but I will most certainly break the Key or my knuckles. I am going to go get some Apex sockets and try those. That little screw is in there.
Be sure to get the correct torque when putting that stuff back on.
I replaced my stem a few weeks ago and had to purchase a 5mm alen socket. I was afraid I was going to stripp it...
That little screw is a beast. I am about to just give it hell and drill it out.

A very common problem. Some individuals had to have another bolt tac-welded to the screw to get it out.

GOOD LUCK!
Its actually very easy to get the stem out, once you get that damn allen screw out. Leave the handlebars on after everything else is taken off so you have something to grab while pulling it up, should slide out pretty easy unless its really bent.
It isn't really bent, but it is twisted pretty good. The welding idea sounds pretty good. Plus it will give me a chance to use my new welder.
Well, I finally got the bolt and the stem out. Thanks for all of your advice. Sometimes I am a little slow <_<

Fuel, What all do you need as far as the old stem?

P.S.
I changed my username because I recieved my number kit for WORCS next year :banadance:
