i keep seeing where some people are using off brands, regular oils and other such things in thier r450. i was wondering if this is hurting our trans/clutches? i was under the assumption that we had to use an oil with specific additives to prevent damage to the clutch (seeing as its a wet clutch system and all) i want to see your views on this matter? can i run something different than what the manufacturer recommends or do i have to run what they recomend/something similar to what they recommend? i have no experience with the wet clutch systems so i dont know either way.

my point in asking is that i have certain preferences in oils for the cars i build/drive

I have been using the tried and trued Delo 400 15w-40. Same oil that I use in most everything I own which requires oil. I have had MANY motorcycles and never had a problem. Probably not what the gearheads want you to use, but its never let me down. I would rather use what I know works than what some marketing company tells me to use.

Just my opinion anyway. No one else has to worry but me if my muffler bearings go out b/c of the oil I used. :D
