i havent with the ltr yet but i had a hard time keeping the shifter on my z400. my problem was the bolt that held the shifter on rattled loose and then wore the splines down inside the shifter and wouldnt tighten tight enough to keep it from slipping around the shaft. cheap fix was to take hand saw and take a fine bit more out of the clamp slot so that it would clamp down tighter. hope this helps

I’m pretty sure that the shaft is either broken or stripped inside the case. How big of a project would it be to remove the crankcase cover on the right side of the quad? Or should I have the dealer do this? It’ does not look very hard to remove, it’s what’s on the other side I don’t Know about.

You'd have to be dry-rocking those shifts at some really odd RPM's to be able to break a shift-fork that quick. I'd drop it off at the dealer, and make sure they cover it under warranty

I'm not arguing with you in any way and I do agree that he should take it to the dealer and have it fixed under warranty work if it is possible. I'm just drumming up conversation.

I've never heard of "dry rocking"... what are you referring to when you say that?

I'm going to talk about shifting here for a little bit too. I don't see that a broken shift fork can give the a feeling that the shifter shaft is broken. Even if a shift fork was broken or bent, it would still feel like it is shifting gears due to the shifting star(#26) and the stopper cam(#25) running together. They give you your stopping points and are what makes the "shift" feel to your foot. Also, there is no way that shaft can be broken. Too many other smaller components to go first. A one thing that would tend to go on the z400 is the stopper arm(#25). It would tend to bend over easy with hard abuse. There was a guy out there that was welding a gusset at the bend to stiffen them back up. There's a lot of other things it can be of course, I'm just throwing up ideas from past experience

My old kfx motor that I had to tear apart. It was a shift fork issue, but the shifter never did get loose.....

I definitely worded that wrong...shifting without a clutch at given RPM's where the motor does not want to naturally shift without the clutch pulled.

Was not insinuating that he did indeed break it, was simply trying to disprove the chance of it being broke. Alot in how you read it I guess, most of what I was saying was based off the title of the thread

some ltr's have been breaking the casing where the stopper for the shifter screws into the casing(no30 on clones diagram).this happens if you land on the gearshifter or are very rough with the gears.

That is good to know and would be a very easy fix. Thanks for the info!
