I have been thinking about going to some sand dunes I have never been. My buddie acts like it would be hard on my bike and motor. I was wondering if it is and if so how bad? Also what all will I need or any tips? Will I need to get a different filter all I have is the stock one right now also will i need a cover on my airbox? How important are sand tires I know they will probably help alot, but would I still have fun if I didnt have any? Ill probably try to get some sand tires before I go. The guy I am going with said they sell sand tires there pretty cheap I dont have any idea what size or what kind they are. Has anyone found a size that you dont have to change the sprockets? Sorry for all the questions and if they have already been asked thanks and anything will help.

Most all the questions have been answered on here if you just search and look a bit......But no you dont need a different filter unless you want it to breath more! Dont have 5 tons of lube on your chain keep the sand out of your motor by useing by having the filter attached very well....yes get tires if you can...will you have fun w/o them I say yes but you will have much more if you get them...they are out there for all price ranges......If you buy a 20 in rear you can run them stock but to help you out.... go get a 20.00 13 tooth front sprocket....its the same one as the Z400.......Just my .02!!!!! Keep reading you will learn so much from all these guys!!!!!

WD-40? go for it but from what i have heard and been told this is a bad idea, it eats at the rings in the chain. Use the same chain lube you usually do but dont soak the chain in it and wipe off any excess. I been riding dunes forever and this has always worked for me. But thats just my .02

Yes, I have been there many times...

Not hard on motor (I would ask your buddy how it is hard on it)...stock filter is fine. Here is a quote from the Sand Tires Unlimited web site "Sand is to ATV's as air is to a plane and water to a boat." Me likey that!

You will need a flag; you can purchase one from Jim's sand toys or LSPS for $20 and they have a lifetime warranty.

You will have tons of fun with stock tires...now multiply that by 5 and that is the fun you will have with paddles. Not a must but a pretty big difference. Why sweat changing sprockets? It takes 10 minutes and makes a world of difference. The last 13T front I picked up cost $13. If you are unsure how to do it no biggie, we can help you out. It is something you really need to know anyway because we all need to be checking our chain slack often.

WD40 VS chain lube is like what oil is best to run? Everyone has a personal opinion and who is to say any of us are correct. I personally am totally sold on WD40 and that is what I recommend...and tsubaki or something like that also (write up in DW). Form your own opinion by using both products and their individual outcomes!
Here is a thread where chain lubes were discussed...Chain Lube Thread

OKTRX450R Ya my buddie told me he thinks he will get sand is his motor or something. He is probably just mad because he probably wont go so he's trying to get me worried about going I really dont know why though because I know he has been before on motorcycles. I have been using WD40 so I think I'll keep using it and hope it dont mess the chain up. I dont think it will. I'm going to get a 13 tooth sprocket. What size tires you run? I was going to try to get some 20" sand tires you think I will need to run a 9" rim? Is that Jim's sand toy or LSPS are they in Waynoka? Thanks again

I've heard quite a few people complain of sand being hard on clutches...mostly from people who are not geared correctly for the surface/traction change

Sand in the motor is possible...through the intake...but then so is dirt, mud, water, everything else in the environment! Hmm, hard on the clutches...possible. Sand puts a good drag on the motor/clutch causing it to work harder then on a hard packed surface. Personally I think there is some rider operation and gearing that will also play into the scenario. My TRX is pushing mid 50's HP and it has the same clutch Honda sent in the bike...going on 2 years!

Look around a bit there are several threads on sand tires and what folks prefer...I like the 21" height and an 8" diameter wheel...but that is just my personal preference. All sizes referring to diameter not width: 8" good for drag/hill and spongy effect...10" good for turning and stiff sidewall (sidewall won't roll over as easy)...in theory 9" a compromise between the 8 and 10.

LSPS is right in the south campground and you can get to it from the hwy. Jims is in Waynoka on the hwy about a block North from the Ampride gas station and the road to the North Camprground/Cowboy Camp.
