We will be getting a brand new LTR sometime in the near future and want to know what I should do to properly break it in. Weve never bought a brand new one before, especially this high caliber of a quad, so I was wanting to know what to do. Plus, when should I change the oil to prevent the tranny whine, (and will this tear the tranny up fast) and what should we use for oil? Thanks for your time, Kyle.

1- follow this guideline for break-in http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm (Probably what 75% of us did)
2- Not everyone gets the whine. I didn't notice it until the first ride after I changed the oil (bike had about five hours on it) Used Klotz(still heard it), then Motul(still heard it), and then I used Royal Purple I haven't heard it since.
3- Royal Purple and Amsoil are good I'm sure a couple other people will say a few more.

Also let the engine cool after each ride. I have only gotten the whine 1 time, and that was from going in ovals on my flat track for 15 minutes straight at high revs and hard braking.

I just made sure to change the oil after about the first 1/2 hr then again after about another hour just to make sure any machineing millings that may have been left behind were flushed out. After that I change it every few hours. I haven't got the whine. I use 15w40 mobil Delvac. It's for diesel engines but unlike the oil used in cars, it's built to withstand the abuse of running through geartrains. It's all I've run for years and has never givin me any greif. Good luck w/ you bike!

During my first hard ride it happened-the whine. Took her home checked here on this forum and did the oil change filter change and added an extra 200ml of oil to the manuals recommended amount to the right side or clutch side. I push it hard now and have never heard the whine again. I change the oil and oil filter after every other hard ride or race about 4 hours of seat time between changes.

You don't need the cherry bomb for break-in unless you plan on breaking it in with no lid/no sparky. Then you would def. want it because you wouldn't want to be running lean during break in.

what if we plan on adding a DASA pipe later on. What should we do to break it in? Should we get the cherrybomb and get rid of the spark arrestor and lid? Or what? It doesnt really matter to us. Plus, what offset Hiper should we get for the front?? We plan on keeping the stock a-arms for alooooooooooooooooong time. I was thinkin 3+2, or should we get the 4+1? Thanks for everything. And i got yellow b/c there are so many people doin white's. lol. But i like both. Dad liked yellow to.

DASA later on no prob, no need to worry bout that while breakin in.

to break in read the link above posted by svtjames.

you can break in without the cherrybomb if ya like but remove the lid and sparky..

3+2 a tad wider than stock= little more bump steer but a stabilzer will fix that(you might not even notice the difference either way).

4+1 a tad skinnier than stock...

hope this helps

I run 4+1 and don't even notice the narrower width. It actually helps it carve a lot. All the bump steer is gone as is the horrid push it had before. The front end stays planted in any turn now. I'm runnin' Maxxis Razr MX orange label tires that I'm sure help a lot too. The first thing IMO you need to do is change the front tires/wheels, add a steering dampner, pull the spark and lid then add the cherry bomb. (guess this means you don't want mine?????)
