Recently purchased a 07' 450 has cherry bomb and RS-5 slip on its hard starting. Like really really hard, just cranks and cranks. If its pushed it'll pop off and run like a top. From what I've been reading on here I believe it needs the valves adjusted. Going to tear it apart tomorrow night and spec it.

Choke lever-- what the heck is a choke lever doing on a FI bike and what is its purpose? When do you use it? I've messed with it when it wont start and it doesn't make a lick of difference.

FI light-- I noticed today while riding on break from work the FI light was on. Should I just adjust valves and disconnect battery (I'm guessing you can clear it that way?) and see if it stays off or is there a way to check the codes? Like a paper clip to get the light to blink?

O one more thing, is a aftermarket intake beneficial or would it make more since to just cut some wholes in the side of the factory air box? Like the 3x3 mode they do on a lot of the suzuki 400sm bikes.

Most likely you have tight valves, yes. But you need to put it in dealer mode and read the trouble codes before clearing them. You can put it in dealer mode by removing the CRBM, and grounding the white wire with the red tracer (in CRBM plug)

The 'choke lever' is actually an idle up lever. it doesn't richen it up, but it allows extra air past the TB to increase idle speed.

I'd start with valves too!

That is not a choke but it works like one, Just lets air in...
you can remove it and plug the hole with a Yoshimura plug or make your own. Many threads on this.

for the FI you need to read the codes in limp mode, there are threads for this too.

Valves were tight. My smallest feeler guage went to .006" and it wouldn't fit under the intake cam and the exhaust would only allow a .007" shim in.

I did my equations using .007" intake and .011" exhaust.
