Mid Size Trucks And Toy Haulers

Ok I have a 2000 S-10 ZR2 with the 4.3 liter and I was thinking of gettting a little toy hauler. I really don't want to go with the tent trailer option because it rains so much here in the Northwest. I was just curious if anyone is already doing this or knows someone who is and how its working out. Here is the trailer I was thinking of getting.

Nice S-10! Also to help u how much does that trailer cost? If it's a decent price it wouldn't be a bad buy. Also if u are going to have more than one person staying it could be alittle bigger, but for once and awhile company it will be fine.
They go for about $10,000 which is pretty cheap, but there are no bells or whistles on it. I could save $900 on shipping if Junkie or Fuel would drive it up from southern Cal for me, lol. I'm most worried about is pulling that much weight with a mid size truck. I gave them a call today and asked about it, and they told me that what it was designed to be pulled behind but I don't trust sales people. I guess I might have to invest in the hitch and overloads and see if they will let me pull one before I buy it, to make sure it pulls easy.

Maximum Towing (lb.) 6400

Trailer Weight (Dry) 3,200 lbs.
Gross Weight
(Trailer + Load) 7,000 lbs.

up to you
Actually with the 4.3 VORTEC 4WD Auto 3.73axle ratio I can only tow 5,900 lbs. max. The 7,000 lbs. is the max weight for trailer plus load. I'm thinking if the trailer 3,200 lbs, LTR<400 lbs, and food, gear, and sleeping bag 500 lbs. that would be 4,100 lbs if I run dry. If I have to, I can even drop in some new diffs maybe 4:11's or something. I just got a POS 87 toyota PU 2wd to drive back and forth to work, so my S-10 is just going to be for the weekends and trips.

if your goin to be hauling the trailor a lot upgrade your truck because ive seen sooo many wrecks due to large tow wieght vs. tiny truck. towing isnt something to take lightly. if u do stick with the 10 get a brake booster and upgrade your brakes, and make for certain your trailor has brakes on it, most do anymore thou, if you havnt already, u seem like you know what ur doin. make sure u stay up on ur fluids cuz in the last 3 yrs we replaced about 5 s-10 motors and they are a B*TCH!
maybe buy a older trailer and throw your bike in the back of your truck...jmo..get some overloads too!!!!
NW...for the next 72 hours GMAC is running a 0% for 72 months deal...get it? :p
That combo is a recipe for disaster! you would need air bags, weight dist-o hitch, anti sway, trailer brakes, etc., etc., etc.. Buy a pop up if you dont have a large family. take a peep at this, maybe more suited for the S10

Yeah but the payments on my truck now are $0 a month at 0% interest. I've looked at doing the little travel trailers and they weigh just as much as this little toy hauler if not more. I know if I tow with the S-10 I will have to get an electronic brake control and rear overload springs. The trailer should have brakes on both axles and sway controls will be a must. I drive a straight truck for a living and I get paid by the hour not by milage or load, so I'm the slowest and safest guy out on the road. I don't mind cruising in 3rd at 50mph and taking a break every hour or so to let the auto trans take a break(ZR2 has a stock cooler). Plus it is only 4 hours to the Oregon Dunes and 2 hours to Sand Lake from Vancouver, WA.

I've looked at those fleetwoods in person. The little toy hauler is $10,000 and that tent trailer goes for 13,000. It's way over priced. The only thing more over priced than that thing is the little airstreams for $30,000 for a little 16ft.
OK fine...give me your name and address so I can collect on your life insurance :p
I have no idea what I'm going to do. Maybe I will just use the company truck until the company starts asking why I have to fill the MRI in Coos Bay every week instead of once a year, lol.
NW,

My mom used to have a ZR2 just like yours only in pewter. That was a fun little truck! Fairly quick and it looks pretty tough for a stock truck. BUT, they are still an S-10 truck. I don't believe it will like the load myself. I think a 1/2 ton truck would love pulling that RV. Yes, you can get a brake controller and load bars(love them) and probably be fine stopping and leveling out the truck, but I think the tranny will take a beatin' if you hit any bigger hills or city traffic with it. It would be nice if they let you try it before you buy it.... just pull it around town some and get on a 65 mph road as well.

JMO
Yeah I figure when I get ready to spend the cash I will get the truck set up first and then take it for a test pull. The dealer said it was designed for a truck like mine and if I'm willing to buy it after the test pull, I don't see why they wouldn't let me take it for a test. Maybe even see if I can put the LTR in the back or leave it in my bed.

Oh and I kick myself is the ass for not getting the pewter. The black looks good when its clean, but the pewter hides dust and rainspots and it kinda sparkles in the sun.
Black is soo tight when clean, but it is hard to keep it that way. :( I, as well as my parents, usually opt for a lighter colored truck so they are easier to keep clean(or appear that way). You are right, the pewter was cake to keep clean and it had a lot of metallic in it. I think GM quit making the pewter and went with a sandstone color which doesn't look as good IMO.

It would be nice if they would at least fill the fresh water tank to give you some load b/c it won't be til you are ready to head out on your first trip with everything loaded that you will know exactly what you are up against. And there is nothing worse than having problems on a vacation.

Thats good stuff right there!! Im going to look at a new Duramax today :p
Everyone buys at least ONE black vehicle in their life...for those of us who aren't that smart?...I bought 2...sigh
And your right Clone...nothing looks better clean than a black vehicle...for about 15 minutes... :(
i don't think you will have a problem pulling it! my dad had a 91 s10 4.3 reg cab 2wd. and he used it to pull his race car, with a car haller a 71 camero with a built 383. the truck had 91k on it. he gave it to me with 120k i sold it with 165k on it to my friend and he still drives it with no problems with the trans. and i think it's up to around 170k now still shifting good.but starting to smoke some at start up.
I had a Dodge Durango ( I know, it was a Dodge) with a 5.9 ltr and it had a 7,900 lb towing capacity so I bought an 18ft toy hauler, thought it would be ok. I never considered how much weight those things weigh 'loaded'. After installing air bags, a little spring work, I thought I was done. Then came the dist-o hitch, anti sway, and a break upgrade for the truck. Thougth that would be enough. Well, there a lot of other things to consider when you tow, like long hills, strong wind, and the worst, vehicles passing you! Every truck that passed me had me white nuckled as I would go almost lane to lane using a light truck to tow. That lasted me about 6 months, ditched the small truck, & bought an Avalanche 2500 with an 8.1 ltr and never looked back (except for gas stations)! Just my $.02
Yeah, I did a little window shopping this weekend. I found out they make some really cool little trailers now that are designed for my truck that weigh 2,200 empty and 3,100 max fully loaded with water. That little toy hauler weighs 3,210 empty and it didn't come with anything, no AC or awning. I might just go with one of these little ultralight trailers and put my LTR in the bed of my truck. I kinda liked this one, its a hard shell but it has a queen tent slide out. What do you guys think?

Bantam Flier F17

The Rocky Mountain Edition has a solid axle with 15 wheels and BFG mudterrain tires. I figure I don't even need to pop out the queen bed when its just me most of the time.
