I just spent 3days there last week and really enjoyed it. You might have some one move this to the Duning section so some the OK guys see it. The weather should be nice so you might get a good group together.

I moved the topic for you...

WOW, 9 hours...that is a hefty drive my friend.

Just checked the calendar and the 9 year old has a Dr's appt. on the 22nd, I will see if we can move it up a day and meet you all out there.

I will keep you posted...

Where are you buying your tires from and what are you getting?

If you are purchasing Skat Trak tires you should give Jims Sand Toys in Waynoka, OK. a call. I have been told he has very good prices on Skat Trak products and can order whatever you need and have them there waiting on you when you arrive (saving you on shipping)...check his prices against Fullerton's though.

Like I said I have never purchased from Jim's but he has quite a following on Planet Sand and with the LS, OK crowd...worth a try because shipping these days is crazy!

Jim's Sand Toys: 580-824-2021.

I have purchased 90% of my tires from Joe at Fullerton...

I have been looking at this all day ..... here is my OPINION. I would rather run stock tires then either of those or Sand Stars, Sand Geckos, Sand Skate II's .... or any of those tires. I WOULD run any of these tires

6 cup hauler
9 cup glidder
6 cup paddla brat
9 cup paddla brat
6 cup Sand Skate I

IMO if not one of the above tires i would take knobbies with about 2 - 3LBS of air and call it good. The above tires are the most money, but worth EVERY penny. Then save for a good set of paddles. The Stock knobs will work great. I love knobs in the sand. Once you are going they are fine. Just no hole shot.

Fuel, I swear I am not following you around and disagreeing with you!

I would consider any of the AMS tires the best of the inexpensive tire choices.

While I agree completely if you are going to dune very often get one of the tires in Fuel's list above...but if you are a casual duner with only a couple trips per year the AMS tires will serve you very well. They are some of the lightest molded tires and have a nice rubber compound. Or, if you just do not have the money and will not for sometime the AMS tires I would take hands down over no paddles at all...plus, once you have more money or more serious into duning then you can sell them and get the better tires...

The difference in the two tires you mentioned are straight paddle versus V design...what performance are you looking for ratherBridin? I personally am a straight paddle man just for the shear straight ahead acceleration a straight gives you over a V design...

Yeah just let us know. I'll be heading out there for Laborday weekend. But that shouldn't be too hard to make that date too. Especially since I should be done with my car by then(its eating all my money and taking all my time).

Definately give Jims a call and compare his to Joe's prices. I've bought tires from both and will still buy from both. Jims usually only carries paddles in 8+ cup configurations. Thats why I bought my 7 paddles from Joe (he had them in stock). Either of those shops can get you anything you want, but Joe from what I understand can comp cut tires for you.

LS is pretty small in comparison to many other big dune places. The tallest dunes might only be in the 50-60' range. The flats where everyone drags is only about 300' long on average..... there are a couple longer places but not much. There are tons of fun single track trails to race and chase your buddies through. And there are Water Hazards on the north east side that are fun to play around. So there is plenty of variations in riding style out there with many rolling dunes and a good share of razor backs..... not any real bowls though.

We don't have any real sand highways like glamis where you can keep 5th gear pinned the whole way. And as stated we don't have the kind of monster hills like Sand mountain or $100 hill.

LS Oklahoma has paved roads in the camp ground so If I were to pick an all round tire to try next, it would be a 21x11x8 6-paddle Extreme Hauler triple buff. But I like to drag race on top of doing everything else. If you like turning and sliding more, I'd say Sand Tires Unlimited Sand Skate I's comp cut in a 21X12X10 9-paddle and either of those two tires on blue label .125 rims. And because of the paved roads I would not run the gliders on a full sized bike only because the blades are so thin in comparison

I've since learned how to really launch and tune my current 7-paddle 21x11x8 standard buff haulers. But I'd still like to go with one less paddle in a really light weight tire front and rear.

Otherwise I'm going to refer you to one of Robs best posts on tires (this thing should be made into an article or stickied....Robs post that is.)

Montana, try this thread out as a starter...IMO Geckos are the worst tire you can purchase...

Clickity, click, click ME!

To add to what has been stated in that thread if you are looking for a super low cost venture you might check into AMS Sand Snake. I have talked with them several times and they seem to be super nice folks to deal with. The tires are very inexpensive and relatively light for molded tires.

Just give me some freakin paddles---very cost minded:
Drag/climbing:
AMS Sand Snake
AMS Diamond Trak

Duning:
AMS SideWinder
AMS Diamondtrak
You would also do some good to check into the Skat Trak Gliders...I have been hearing good things but I have no personal experience with them. NOTE: I have never ran the AMS sand snakes nor Sidewinders. I have seen them in action and for what they are they perform well so I feel confident in recommending them as a low cost solution.

If you are not into dumping loads into dune tires do not sweat it...not everyone is a dune freak and not everyone gets the opportunity to dune as often so the $$ investment may not pay out for you...almost any paddle is better then none...almost! ;)

ha ha ha sand tires is a hot topic on this board we must be posting at the same time.

:p

BTW LS folks like more bite in their tires since the drags are shorter distance and the hills aren't tall enough for them to notice much of a difference. Just something to remember when they start telling you a 6cup hauler is for a 250.

Hmmm, I have a set of 21X12X8 6-paddle Extremes double buff on Douglas .125 (7" wide) wheels that I offered to let you run the last trip we met up at LS??? Hmm, let me see, what did you say, naahh, thanks though! :smiley_1poke:

I will graciously extend the offer again!

I think you will like them if you are looking for more hook up! IMO too much hook up, but I am so used to the Brats. The very second you let the clutch out and hit about 4K rpm you will feel the difference with these tires...man I wish this 100* crap would roll on out so we can get out there and do some riding instead of talking about it!

ratherBriding I always stay in the North Campground in Cowboy Camp, the bad part is the only way to get from your camp to mine is to ride through the dunes or get in your truck and drive the highway...kind of a bummer. I have never stayed at the LSPS campground because they really torqued me off. On weekends they deem to be "popular" they charge an additional $50 on top of the normal camping fees just because it is a high use weekend...to me that is just plain price goughing and I refuse to stay there...plus it is dusty as all get out if the wind is blowing. We can not fit our rig in the South campground so we will have to plan a time to hook up in the dunes and maybe have dinner together (YOU TOO RICH) one evening.

Is it September yet?

ha ha ha I know I know :D

And I'll take you up on that test ride next time we meet up.

I think our duning shedule might be as follows.... 18th Aug / Laborday weekend / Then the 22nd weekend.

Edit: Welp family emergencies just changed my plans. Don't quite know when the next time out will be.... If I were to guess..... It'd probably be laborday weekend at the soonest.

ratherBridin brought this gathering up in the Rec Riding forum in an old thread and I suggested moving it to the dune riding section and titling it so we could all track it easier... :(
