ok, i got my LTR friday, rode it all weekend with no whine. today, i changed the oil (Suzuki ATV Oil 10w40; 1.4 quarts to the tank, 400ml to the other side) and oil filter (didnt see any metal flakes), added the cherry bomb, removed airbox lid and baffle and after riding on my track today for about 3 hours i got the whine. i broke it in like motoman said, and just rode it around my track in short intervals. i did however sorta kinda maybe abused the clutch just a little on break in... (pulling it in through corners, revving then dumping it coming out of corners) could this be the cause? if you have "the whine", did you abuse the clutch on break-in?? one of my buddies races dirtbikes, and he said the hondas tend to blow-up and the suzukis have weak trannies. this is the same as the dirtbike motor, just the EFI. hes rode them all so im guessing he knows his stuff. just wondering if everyone with the whine kinda maybe sorta could've abused the clutch on break in??

My friend has the new Suzuki RMZ450 and the motors look completely different. While the LTR450 engine may be based on the RMZ450, I think it is only similar. The tranny is completely different, the heads look different, cams are different among other things. It also seems that everybody that is having this tranny whine issue seems to notice it after an oil change as it has been pointed out. Based on that, I think it is likely not some thing to worry about but rather an issue caused by the type of oil that people are using. One would think that Suzuki is using a different oil from the factory. One that is perhaps thicker and keeps the gears from chattering in the transmission. With the lighter weight oil, the gears likely move or spin easier and thus make a more audible noise. This is just my guess. I am not a mechanic and my LTR does not make this noise. I have only a handful of hours on it and I am about to do my first oil change. It will be interesting if somone who has this noise in their tranny, would do some tests with different oils and or oil weights to see if one would make the noise go away.

From what I've read most people are having to put 200ml more oil than the manual states. This could indeed be where the wining is coming from. I know I absolutely have to do the same thing on my Z as the recommend amount doesn't even register on the dipstick.

I was going to run petroleum oil for the first 3 changes, then switch to synthetic. I started it, checked the oil, and it was at the top line. I would hate to overfill it, would it hurt anything? Maybe I should switch to a heavier weight oil?

Did you let it sit for 3 minutes after you turned it off and then check the oil or did you check it immediately?

I'm using Valvoline 10w40 and i love it, but the only time i ever heard my ltr whine was when i was riding a flat track, which made me accelerate really fast and slow down fast which put some stress on the engine, other than that it doesn't whine. Also i don't have to put the extra 200ml in too.

I have changed oil twice. No whine yet. 1st oil change was suzuki 10w-40 and second was amsoil 20w-50. My oil always has been on exactly. No need to add 200ml more.

I get no whine at all if I am riding hard packed desert or track conditions, but as soon as I put paddles on and hit the sand I start getting the famous whine from the gear box after a while. I dont care tho, I keep good care of the motor, change the oil religiously, and I have a 5 year warrantee. Some people heckle the extended warrantee, but I had over $2,000 worth of FREE dealership work done on my old bike, so to me its worth the investment and peace of mind.

No, I didnt let it sit for 3 minutes. I started it, let it idle for a few minutes, shut it off and then checked it. Should I let it sit for a few minutes after shutting it off? I'm thinking of switching to 20w50 for the next oil change. I havent heard it in a few rides though.
