1st post new to the site. I got a 2007 ltr mods: cherry bomb, slip on, open air box, kibble white race valves, and port and polish. I'm getting oil in my air box and my oil smells like gas. It starts fine and don't smoke. I keep up on my oil changes. I noticed it last night after my race there was oil on my swing arm. So i cheacked my oil lvl and noticed it smelled a little like gas. The oil lvl was a little down i guess from where it came out my air box. I've read that it might be the rings with oil in the air box and my injectors with gas in the oil just wanted a different opinion. Thanks

In my experiences, it's the rings. As for the oil smelling like gas, it's probably associated with the rings being bad.

Crankcase breather tubes. One goes from the crankcase breather box/baffle to the air box. Maybe it came off. Just something to look at. Also look at the cylinder plating while you have the cylinder off. There's been a few cases where the plating has chipped off or came off cuz its kinda weak.

In my experience if its bad enough to put oil in the airbox, the rings have broken and have damaged the plating. replated cylinders seen to be a little sturdier than the OE. If the ring is broken, then it has most likely damaged the piston as well, I wouldn't replace rings without a piston.

those stock pistons are pretty durable. If the cylinder is within spec and the piston is in spec re ring it and send it.

Yep it'll still start and run for awhile.

Keep it up it'll get worse and eventually start sucking it through the throttle body enough that you'll see the smoke and smell it.

Been there when I bought mine..

And there again now. Not because of a broken ring, but sucked sand in and it's scored my cylinder walls enough to get the compression down in the bottom end.

if the oil smells like gas change it and set the level to the top of the stick. Then go run your race that is what I would

x2 compression rings.
x2 oil rings.
x1 oil scraper ring.
So you should have (5) rings total.
An RMZ 450 i rebuilt in the past only had (1) compression ring.
Heres my question, after reading your post through, why didnt you remove and inspect the top end before purchasing any parts? Good rule of thumb is to do a complete inspection prior to parts purchase unless you have a no issues running bike and just want to freshen things up or upgrade.

So this started out as what I thought was going to be a little problem and now its differently not.
I got into the engine yesterday finally to see what was all wrong and it turned out to be worse then i thought.
I had a broke ring witch was lodged in between my piston and jug and just gouged both.
I still don't see how it ran as good as it did, but now i need to get it back up and running before next race Saturday
So now I'm looking for a standard bore Jug if anyone is selling one let me know asap text 423-754-9223
I got a piston already
