I heard not to do the wrap. Do a search I know there is a existing topic on this. I'm taking mine to a company that does some sort of thermal coating that is supposed to lower the temp and increase performance. They do most of their work on race car headers and exhaust. They can also coat it any color you want. I'm going with the black to match my can.

He is correct... With all the head pipe heat that is produced from the LTR combined with getting it wet, it will eventually corrode through the pipe... It does it at a decently quick amount of time compared to headers on a car since our headpipes are thinner and you get the wrap wet... You could do it and change the wrap out but that would get way too expensive... You can make a heat shield if you really need one...

Lower the temp by how much? Increase performance by how much?

I can speculate the answers...not enough to keep the pipe from giving you a 3rd degree burn and not enough to show on a dyno!!! But it does look cool and IMO prolong the life of the exhaust! :scoot:

To answer your questions: I don't know and I don't know!

I'm sure it would still burn the hell out of you leg without protection.......but I'm hoping it is enough to save my pant from getting burned. I also love the bling factor. It may not make me any faster but it will look better doing at least the same speed.

Just spoke with Shawn out at HPC and he is claiming to lower the skin temps by 50%. WOW If thats true I will be very supprised.....I was not expecting that much. He is suposed to call me back with the price to have my header done. I believe it said $65 on a new header and $85 on a used one on their site, but I inquired about the E-series which is supposed to be the best for quads. He also claimed that Polaris may be in the future using this method on all their new pipes.

If the coating has to be applied to the inside of the header as well as the outside, aren’t you reducing the overall internal diameter of the pipe from what the manufacturer has made the pipe to perform its best at?

The coating, if I remember correctly, is applied at .03-.05 thickness...so probably not changing the diameter enough to hurt.

I will agree keeping the heat in the pipe will increase the velocity in the pipe...but in all the tests I have seen it is negligible on the dyno.

Reduce the "skin" temps by 50%! Wow, I would like to see some before and after shots with a temp gun please! I am not puting you down love to ride...I would just like some proof!

Believe you and me.......I would like to see some proof as well. Thats just what he said not me. I would love to put that to the test but I don't have a way to measure the heat. I'm not as mechanicaly incline as some of you are. My best tool is trust. I have to hope they are not pulling my chain. If there is an easy way to check it I would love to do some before and after tests. Tell me how and I will give it a shot.

Testing?...get yourself a cheap laser temp gauge and you can tell right away...

HP theory?...yea I heard that before also...all I can say is that if it were true?...then Porsche would have it on their cars...

When I was racing we just did it so the headers wouldn't look as bad as they do with paint...and in an effort to keep the engine compartment temps down as much as we could...on a dyno?...I could never see the difference in the curve...

So bling gets the vote...this time...

I use Jet-Hott on all of my headers. Not sure on the temp drop. I will tell you mine will burn the chit out of your leg if you touch it. I dont even come close to touching it, but i guess it will depend on your ridding position. I think the biggest benefit is the look.

I'll get ahold a temp gun and test it out.....but it will probably be a few weeks. I want to get 1-2 runs in before it starts snowing, so it will have to wait till I can tie my machine up for a couple weeks. I wish there was someone around here with a dyno that would'nt rape you for a couple runs. I don't really think that I would see any noticable inprovments on a dyno though. Like I said I'm most interested in dropping the heat, just enough to keep my pants from burning and of course the looks.

This is what I had done to my CT Sonic pipe. I did see a small percentage gain in HP on the dyno after the application to the pipe. However, not conclusive if it was the pipe or because it was a cooler day. Guys in San Diego, go check this place out. Its out on the 58.

Love To Ride, please get on trx450r.org and go to the sponsors section...there is a sponsor called KBR. They are located in Utah (can't remember the town) but PM KBR, Kam is his name and he owns a shop with a dynojet dyno. He is a great guy and will treat you right!

I think the coating makes the pipe look much better and last longer...I have had a jet hot coated pipe and an HPC pipe...both burned holes in my over the boot riding pants...sorry.

You will find it is a ceramic coating, the pipes are coated on the inner as well as the outer. It improves flow and decreases the temp of the pipe. My mate has had it done to his Pred in a chrome finish and I have had the extractors in my tonner done in a satin black finish. Under bonnet temp has dropped and she does run a bit cooler. Definatley positive results from ceramic coating.
