well this weekend we got to install my cp piston and had the head ported.(no cams though  )big thanks to matzac maching and matzac porting.much to our suprise suzuki did a very nice job with the heads on these bad boys.they were the best these guys have ever seen come out of a factory.not sure what they will look like as the tooling wears out but everything was a perfect fit as far as how the throttle body and boots all lined up perfectly.(a major disadvantage in a cannodale head).even around the valve seats everything was smooth where there is normally huge steps and machining marks on yammi and honda heads.exhaust side needed the most help.he matched everything with the header and corrected a few areas in the ports.very nice work.
we got the piston in and fit no problem everything went smooth EXCEPT for the cams.when i talked to yosh they said i simply press the gears off my cams and presss them onto the new ones like it was no big deal!not the case gents.we were assuming there were some pins or the cams were splined a key way or something to simplify installation of the new gears.nope they press on and thats it.being that the 2 gears from the rmz ad the ltr are nowhere near the same marks we had no way to even scribe a line to press the new gears on in the right location and to start form scratch and degree the cams in would have been an all night affair pressing them on and off.so with out some sort of fixtur to properly line things up i decided to pop the stock cams back in and let yosh deal wth the gears.
so anyway for now it has the high compression cp piston(13.75:1) and a portjob.got to ride it down the street a little today for break in.huge difference although i do need to dial it in.i have the earlier trinity programmer on top of the cherry bomb wich equals super rich.(yosh pim and fimak should be here this week)got more bottom a lot more mid range and it still revs out well.it pulls hard as a mofo now!it will only get bettere as the rings seat.i didnt get to get it on the dyno before hand like i wanted but will hopefully get it on soon just to see where its at.the cams should add more mid and top end to it.i only went around the block once(about 4 miles) but am pleasantly suprised how much power it picked up already.cant wait to get back to the track

JFARRAR Are you runnin th CP single ring piston? What brand and type of fuel are you runnin? Sounds like you should be in the mid 50's, congrats.
[/b]

yes it is the single ring piston.same as those on ebay.i will most likely be running gt plus from sunoco or ms109 vp as they are available locally.right now it has 100 octane sunoco unleaded and has no pinging but im sure that is border line.when i had my cannondale i had a 14:1 piston in it and they recomended 100 octane fuel in it so it may be ok.im hoping mid 50's with the cams.its probably 50 ish right now.

Call me a little out of the loop, but a single-ring piston? Anyone care to inform me as to why?

Thanks for the positive information J

i got to call yosh tomorrow and see.there may be a trick to doing it who knows.i cannot send my cams in so hopefully i can purchase new gears for them to install.

i was runing it today and tried it with just the cherry bomb and was suprised that i was still not to lean.it was a tad lean but not bad.also to my suprise my headpipe does not glow at all at an idle now  my neighbors love the new throaty sound it puts out now.im sure of it! :smiley_gun:

not real sure why they chose a single ring piston.not really an issue for me it is a race engine and and should hold up long enough for my service intervals.worked out well with my canondales.maybe the gas porting has something to do with it?i would rather have seen the double ring though they do hold up longer.

Single ring pistons make more hp b/c of less resistance on the cylinder. The lateral gas ports are to make the single ring press outward for a positive seal. I'm sure they are using Nitraded rings for longer wear. Hp will go up with a single ring piston, but so will oil consumption.

Yeah, single ringers are definetly higher maintenance and not quite as durable long term as a double ring but they are lighter and rev quicker. When the warranty is up I will be doin the same.

Jfarrar let us know how the PIM feels compared to the CB with your mods. When you are done with the cams and get the fuel dialed in do you plan to do a few pulls on the dyno? If so please post your best run.

Thumpers have come so far, I sure never miss sleep over the TRX310R being gone. LOL Gotta love these LTR's.
