Looks like a wax. I hate chain lube!! I have several different kinds, and havent found one that doesnt go everywhere. Honda with teflon isnt too bad, but here lately ive been using wd-40. Not sure if it does anything. It dont stay on long, but o well.

Actually I hated the stuff that came on the bike new...I was trying to figure out what Suzuki was doing trying to cause premature sprocket/chain wear? Have you noticed all the stuff that stays on the chain with that type of lube?

Our chains are sealed o-ring chains...no kidding! That means the lubrication in the rollers is applied at the factory and held in by the o-rings and is "lifetime lube". This is one reason I cringe when I hear folks talking about power washing their quads...the o-rings can only take so much pressure before they are penetrated and you are washing out the lube and then you are in trouble. You can not re-lube an o-ring chain once the lube is gone you throw it away.

The only reason you lube your chain is to aid in the chain/sprocket contact that is it! Well, and to keep it from rusting...when you use a "sticky" lube you are allowing sand and whatever else to stay on the chain/sprockets accelerating wear because that grit grinds away the material just like sand paper.

I only use WD-40 on my chains and I apply it after every wash and each morning during a trip. Each to their own and this is JMO.

I have a bunch of chain wax spray left over from my sportbike. I was just going to use that. I agree with OKTRX450 that you don't really need to lube the chain at all. The chain wax is mostly a degresser and I would spray it on and wipe it off to get all the road crap and tire that accumilates on the chain. Should do the same for dirt and sand.

I like to use BelRay SuperClean Chain Lube. It's good stuff. Works with O-ring chains, keeps the chain looking brand new, doesnt attract dirt, and doesnt fling off. Just clean the chain real good, then roll the quad foward and spray it on the inside of the chain. When spraying it on the inside, centrifigual force will sling the lube through the chain, getting all the parts you cant get, and wont fling off as if you were to spray the lube on the outside of the chain. Essentially, all the lube does is keep the o-rings lubricated to prevent dry-rotting and premature wear. Once the o-rings are gone, so is the lube inside them!

OK...so how often should you change a chain and how do you know when it's bad?

Keep the slack out of your chain by keeping it adjusted. When you run out of adjustment, its time for a new chain. When you replace the chain, replace the sprockets as well, as a new chain on worn sprockets will cause the chain to wear quickly, and new sprockets with an old chain will cause the sprockets to wear quickly. So change them all at once.

The key is NO LUBE!!! I have a 1998 RMX 250 with the original chain and sprockets, and I have never put chain lube of any kind on it. An O-ring chain is sealed from the factory, any lube you add will only collect dirt. I didn't believe it until I had a vet worcs racer tell me this, my old bike is living proof, and it has been ridden hard for 5 years now. I won't be putting any of that crap on my new LTR, just makes a mess and does more harm than good, TRUST ME! Chains will fail from stretching, impact, or tree branch getting sucked into it. Your ride will be cleaner and happy.

Here on the island in the middle of the Pacific rust is a problem so knowing that it is an o-ring chain I only use wd-40 lightly as a rust prohibiter and water displacer. I've been using it since 1985 with my first lt and have no complaints about chain life.
