Okay! As some of you know, I bent the stock axle in the LTR. My lonestar came in yesterday and I figured I'd slap it in last night. I would have got more pictures but my camera was about dead! (also the reason for the poor quality!)

Okay! Installation took about an hour and 15 minutes once I got everything set up! This is a real simple task that can be done by almost anybody!

1.First thing you need to do is take your wheels off w/ a 17mm socket.

2.Next, remove the cotter pins from the castle nuts on each end of the axle. (I cut mine out w/ a pair of side cutters b/c the new axle comes w/ new pins)

3.Using a 27mm socket, remove the two castle nuts from each end of the axle.(you may have to have someone hold the brake if using hand tools)

4.After that, you’ll need to get a big ass cresent wrench or a pipe wrench and loosen the smaller of the two nuts on the lock nut. (next to the sprocket, I had to have someone hold the brake on this b/c it was tighter than an S.O.B.!!)

5.Loosen the big nut all the way back.

6.Now you can remove the brake caliper mounting bracket. (12mm socket & 2 bolts)

7.Using a hammer (preferably a dead blow, plastic, or rubber mallet)… tap the left side of the axle, pushing it to the right side of the quad.

8.Once the axle is moved over, tap the brake rotor hub back towards the swing arm while holding the axle still.

9.After the hub is moved over (only about 1 inch.), you will see the keeper ring. Using two flat blade screw drivers, work the ring out of the groove.

10.Then, tap on the right had side of the axle, pushing the axle all the way to the left side of the quad.

11.Repeat keeper ring procedure on this side of the axle

12.Once both keepers are removed, tap the axle from the left side, pushing it out of the carrier through the right. Grab the axle and pull it out of the carrier the rest of the way.

13.Once the axle is out, take your hammer and tap the brake rotor hub off towards the outside of the axle.

Now we are ready to reinstall the new one!

1.Put a little bit of grease on your center splines of the new axle and reinstall the brake rotor hub.

2.Slide the axle back through and lightly tap it on the right side. If it doesn’t go easily, DON’T FORCE IT! You will need to turn the sprocket hub back and forth until the splines line up.

3.Push the axle to the right and install keeper ring on the rotor hub side.

4.Slide to the left and install ring on the sprocket hub side.

5.Tighten your big nut back down

6.Then the small nut.

7.Slide your hubs back on and put the nuts on each end and install the new pins. (there was a little
bit of grease on the splines of the stock axle whenever I took the hubs off so I put a little on there for reinstallation.)

8.Put your wheels back on and ride!

That's what the small nut is for. To lock the big one.

Hmmm...I didn't even look at the manual just this tutorial. If the manual says to use it then use it. I will report back if mine comes loose though!

Does anyone know for a FACT, if the larger of the 2 axle nuts does in fact tighten/loosen?

Sprocket Hub Removal

I know this thread is a little old but I cannot get the sprocket hub off. I am removing my axle to replace the carrier bearings. I have removed the wheels, hubs, chain, brake caliper and bracket, and the axle nut. For some reason I cannot get the sprocket hub to move at all. Is there another clip on the sprocket hub side other than the one that needs to be taken off to get the axle nut off? I am thinking it might just be stuck but don't wanna get the torch out and heat it up before I know. Thanks for any replies in advance.

There are 2 axle nuts, you need to loosen them both up then slide the sleeve back and remove the snap ring on the axle. then the sprocket will come off.
