Air Box Removed?

5864 Views 39 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  OKTRX450R
OK Guys...I'm pretty interested in seeing who is removing their air boxs completely?

Who is modifying theirs?

By modification I'm thinking...cutting the sides and/or bottom out of the box but maybe leaving the front for filter and sensor mounting?

More importantly...what effects did the mods make?...better?...worse?

Any dyno info to back up the claims?

Show me what ya got :p

i dont have dyno numbers but getting rid of the airbox makes ALOT more flow. i had a UNI with the stock airbox, no lid. I put a k&n with no airbox and it made a big difference. It went from the a/f running fine to so lean it would hardly run. That would seem bad but now i know how much airflow was restricted. I had to cover the k&N with paper towels to block airflow. once i get a efi controller and richen it up i know it will be a good increase in power over the stock intake.
I removed just the airbox lid and am waiting on a TwinAir filter.
:D Modified my lid, got a EHS Racing kit, did my own work on the lid, looks really good. Using stock filter. Check them out at www.ehsracing.com, runs even better. ;)
iam making a carbon fiber air box that will hold a straigh oval K&N that is 6"long, 6" wide and 4.25" tall, hoping the mold will turn out good and may be able to make a couple boxes. Hope fully its pretty sweet.
Faster...are you thinkng about selling them...let me know :D
if the mold turns out, i should be able to make them fairly quick, then i will sell them. :D
with the end cap pulled out, and a 6''x6''x4.25'' k&n air filter, will just the cherry bomb be ok, or do i need to buy the ems controller?, a box will be on, but no lid.
^^ Faster, you should be ok. Waiting to see the final product. :)
I found out today that it is very restricted with just the lid off. I ended up cutting about a 4" x 3/4" strip off the sides on the top and it made a world of difference. I was out riding so tools were limited and my cuts look like ass so I will probably end up cutting more out and cleaning it up a bit.
Dr...do you have the CRBM installed or is it just stock? That is some interesting info!

See this is the kind of stuff I LOVE to see...really good information here...

Lets keep it going guys :D
Yeah, even with the lid off, there is a lot of restrictions. The seat is too close to the airbox making it tough for the air to get in.

I hated to hack up an airbox so I just made my own airbox eliminator kit with an older z400 pro flow k&n filter. I have an outerwear and everything and it's not all ready in the pic, but just so you can get ideas take a look .........

HERE
Yes I have a CRBM.
Dr...so big difference? And did you notice if you might be getting too much air this time? Also can you take a pic so we can see some of your handy work?

Clone?...what did you do with your sensor? I didn't see it anywhere in the photo...looks real clean...likeing that! :D

I noticed a lot of an increase by doing just that but I don't think I took too much out....maybe not enough. I am still out where we ride and will be home later today so when I get back I will clean up my cuts and snap a few photos.

I noticed alot more power on the drag hill where I was going up against a done up TRX and a few done YFZ's. When I first raced they were pulling by about half a quad length by the top of the hill and after I cut the air box I was pulling on them by half quad lenght or better and also pulling a wheelie 3/4 of the way up.

I think I would have done better too if I had geared the quad for the 21" paddles as the stock gearing seems too tall for that combo. I think I will go get a tooth smaller for the front this week and try again.

Oh yeah, DS650 and Predator's need not apply....had an easy 3-4 lenghts on them.....stock raptor 700 got ate too(the thing hauls though). Also found out that I couldn't beat a YFZ with a 478 kit on it.

It is NOW zip tied to the left hand side of the bike. There is way too much heat that rises from the header to keep it on the right hand side and get and accurate reading of the air that actually gets into the motor.

And as far as the gains, I haven't had it back on the dyno since, but I can tell you it feels MUCH better. Let me tell you..... it really SUCKS! :D
i know of a few guys that run the national mx series that have trimmed a few inches off the top of there air boxes due to the seat being to close and creating a seal!!!!!!

just thought i would give another option!
All this talk about removing or modifying the air box makes me want to do some work on mine...However I ride in dusty/mudy areas.and several creeks....kinda scares me...... dont want to suck water into my bike
The problem I see with removing the airbox is the filter will be right next to the header and silencer. Sure it makes more power over stock, but there can be alot more power made without all that hot air around there.
OK...I got the fever and cut my box. I hear what everyone is saying about heat but I offer this arguement...if my leg is closer to the header than the sensor and I don't feel a thing...I'm gonna argue that the sensor won't change too much...especially while your riding...BUT...I'll probably pick up another air box or 2 on ebay just to experiment with...I just cut mine along the joint so I still had a place to mount the sensor...zip tied the other side just to give it some support...definately picked something up just from hammering it up and down my street :D
